Your PTSA at work: Making a difference
CURRICULUM & EDUCATION
The curriculum & education committee is comprised of Langley parents and meets approximately six times throughout the year. We are very fortunate to have LHS administrators and faculty attend periodic meetings to speak about specific issues and exchange valuable information. The committee is also responsible for organizing and executing the parent/teacher conferences held by appointment only in November and February. Be sure to read the upcoming online PTSA newsletters for more information about conferences. The first committee meeting will be Tue, Oct 7, 9-11 am in the principal's conference room. A huge welcome back to our existing committee members and we encourage anyone interested in joining us to please contact one of the co-chairs listed below. Liz Tisdale, etisdale@aol.com Jamie Kody, kody@tidalwave.net
Ethics Forum Commitee
Save the date... the senior ethics forum will be March 31, 2009. Attendance is mandatory for seniors, so mark your calendars now to avoid conflicts with last-minute college visits and appointments. We are pleased to announce that once again Gannett has generously offered the use of its corporate facility in McLean. An integral part of the senior humanities program, this event serves as a springboard for graduating seniors by challenging them to evaluate their personal ethics within a more societal/global framework. More than 75 adult facilitators (other than Langley teachers or senior parents) work with small groups of students as they participate in a series of modules designed to make them THINK! Please contact us for additional information.

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS
The arts continue to thrive at Langley. FAPA helps finance the extra items that are needed by art, computer graphics, photography, drama, chorus, band and orchestra to make each program extra special for your child. Last year, FAPA helped fund several cameras, printers, music, speakers, scores and musical instruction, to name a few items. Please consider a donation to FAPA to help Langley offer the best program possible for our students. Even if your student is not enrolled in one of these classes, they still benefit by attending a performance or viewing the art work displayed. Look for the flyer in the back-to-school packet. Please contact us if you have any questions. Thanking you in advance for your contribution, SueAnn Morabito, rs4mor@verizon.net Heide Zufall, heide@zufall.com

LANDSCAPING
Hello everyone! New and old, welcome back to a wonderful school year. We have a lot of new things going in the area of landscaping. We are hoping we can get interested people of all ages to join us and bring some fresh ideas! First and foremost, we have a wonderful new irrigation system which relieves us of the chore of draping hoses all over campus trying to get all of our plants watered. Of course the down side is the weeds are also thriving! So we need your help. Our pack of able-bodied assistance has diminished since last year. Graduation took it out of us and we need people to help. The more helping hands, the lighter the work load. We need people who want to weed, and I mean pull those things out of the ground and let your emotions go with them. If weeding is not your bailiwick, how about trotting mulch around the school with us? Twice a year we have a mulch party and need able-bodied (or not so able, we don’t care) to help move more mulch to the beds and rake it out. Planting and transplanting is another big need we have. We have two crews: the week day crew and the weekend crew, so we can accommodate your schedule.
The landscaping committee has also started an “adopt a plot” program and invite all, including families, Langley service clubs or Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, to adopt an area of the grounds and keep it up. We will have a list of approved areas that will need some tender loving care. This is the perfect service project for the school year for any group. (We also have a wonderful writer of college letters among us and in exchange for great work a great recommendation could be had.) Due to the cost of the irrigation system, the landscaping committee is starting the school year with zero dollars. We are not in deficit but we have no money, so donations would be appreciated. Just send your check to Langley PTSA with "Landscaping Committee" on the memo line. Langley High School has a wonderful exterior and it all comes from hard work. The landscaping committee is one of many committees that helps to make Langley and the environs a more pleasant place for our students and teachers during the day and the neighbors all the time. Please help us and pitch in this year. If you are interested in donating your time and effort to a very good cause, please volunteer. It will be appreciated and noticed. Come join us for fun and the chance to create a lovely place for all to enjoy. Send your name, phone number, email address and preferred work times to us. MEMBERSHIP
The Langley Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is a great way to invest in your child’s educational experience and stay connected to other parents and to faculty. Your dues support the equally indispensable student directory and PTSA newsletter. Our funds also help maintain the Langley PTSA website, the dynamic speaker series for students and parents, educational enrichment for students, hospitality for faculty and parents, support for the Senior Ethics Forum, and a safe and drug-free graduation party for our seniors. These important programs and activities that expand and enrich our children’s academic experience rely on your support.
Look for the PTSA Membership sign-up sheet in your student’s back-to-school packet and be sure to join the PTSA family. With as little as $15 per parent and $5 per student or faculty member, our extended Langley family can accomplish so much! Additional contributions are welcome and are tax-deductible.
