FCPS Institute for the Arts

Master the arts! Attend Institute for the Arts (IFTA) and create an artful summer. Now in its 21st year, IFTA provides an opportunity for students to hone their skills within one discipline or experience a variety of fine arts offerings. Select four 60-minute courses each day and create a summer to remember. Students should select courses that match the grade level they will enter in the fall of 2008. IFTA is open to students currently in grades 6-11, who will enter grades 7-12 during the 2008-09 school year, and who are eager to expand their talents and skills in a specific discipline or develop new areas of interest. The registration deadline has been extended.

Checkout the IFTA website for more information on this program.

LHS Foreign Language Summer Bootcamp

Summer 2008 marks the third year of the LHS Foreign Language Immersion Summer Program hosted by the LHS Foreign Language Department. The bootcamp is designed to preserve what students have already learned during the current school year and to prepare them to get off to a strong start in their next level. The summer program is a two-week intensive foreign language “boot camp” in which we review, drill, and prepare students for the next year. Enrollment is limited to 14 students in each class.

Students were previously provided a letter  describing the program. Applications are due by June 27, 2008, and are available for Spanish, French, German, and Latin.

LHS Advanced Placement Summer Workshop

This is an invitation to attend the Advanced Placement Workshop for Students on Thursday, August 21st at Langley High School. The workshop is an opportunity for rising sophomore, junior and senior students to familiarize themselves with the expectations, curriculum, and requirements of the AP courses that they are enrolled in for the upcoming school year. Please note that the workshop covers courses in the Humanities, Mathematics, and Science departments.

More information on this program as well as the registration form can be found here.

Summer Assignments

All students are expected to complete their summer assignments before the first day of school, September 2, 2008. For the latest list of required readings and other assignments check the list.

FCCPTA - School Start Time Survey

Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey from the Fairfax County Council of PTAs:  http://www.fccpta.org/trans_survey/start_time_survey.htm

It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to complete—depending on how much thought you put into your answers.  Also, please share the link with other parents.

Explanation: The Fairfax County School Board believes that later start times would be beneficial for high school students and is looking into the possibility of changing school start times to better correspond with children’s sleep cycles.  The primary reason for the change would be to improve student health and academic performance.

Background:  Here are some items to keep in mind as you take the survey

- Bell schedules (start and end times of the school day) are based on using buses to make more than one trip.
- Now, buses are used 2 or 3 times each morning, so start times are staggered across three basic time frames.
- Elementary schools are in all three time frames from 7:50 am to 9:25 am.
- If bell schedules change, elementary schools would still be in all three time frames, but more elementary schools would start between 7:50 am and 8:55 am.
-  Some elementary schools would still be in the latest time frame, starting between 9:00 am and 9:40 am.

The Fairfax County Council of PTAs (FCCPTA) would like to know about your student’s school-related habits and your views on this issue.  Responses are anonymous.  Please submit one survey per household.  If you have questions, please contact the FCCPTA School Start Survey Coordinator.

Audra Sydnor's letter to the Langley Community

May 6, 2008

Dear Langley Staff Members and Parents,

I am proud to announce that Matthew Ragone, assistant principal and former summer school principal of Chantilly High School, has been appointed as principal of Langley High School. His official start date will be Tuesday, July 1, 2008.

Matthew has had a successful tenure as an instructional leader in the Fairfax County Public School System.  A hallmark of his leadership style is the ability to establish meaningful relationships with students, staff, and parents. He has attained two noteworthy awards:  finalist for the prestigious FCPS Nancy Sprague Leadership Award and the Chantilly High School Student Choice Award.  He has also received awards for outstanding humanitarianism. Matthew is adept at recognizing and developing the individual strengths of his staff members and enjoys mentoring new and experienced teachers. When he is not engaged with his family, other priorities are exercising, sailing, playing the piano, and reading history books.

Prior to becoming an assistant principal, Matthew served 13 years as a teacher at Chantilly HS, McLean HS, Falls Church HS, and Lake Braddock Secondary School.  He also served as department chair at Chantilly HS.  In May of 1997, he won a technology grant.  He has supervised the departments for foreign language, technology, mathematics, ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages), the Honors Program, and the AP (Advanced Placement) Program.  Additionally, Matthew has had experience as a curriculum specialist and writer, where he co-authored and presented the FCPS Program of Studies for World History and Geography II.

Matthew received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Mary Washington College, a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from George Mason University, and his Education Specialist Degree from Virginia Tech University.

Please join me in welcoming Matthew Ragone as the new principal of Langley High School. He is very excited to become a member of the Langley family of students, staff, and parents!

Sincerely,

Audra Sydnor
Assistant Superintendent, Cluster I

Message from Matthew Ragone

Langley Faculty, Staff, and Parents:

Thank you all for your warm welcome this afternoon.

I enjoyed meeting many of you today and will try to process all the names.
If I did not get a chance to meet you, I look forward to meeting you in the near future.

As I mentioned to the group, please don't hesitate to send me an email, if you like.  I would like to know from you what Langley's attributes and it's challenges - if any - are for next year.

What I have learned so far is that this is a dedicated staff, community, and student body.  Your hard work has paid off with national recognition and a great reputation throughout the county.  I hope to live up to the high expectations that made all that possible.

I look forward to face to face conversations starting this Spring and into the Fall until I get to know you all.

Until then, enjoy the Spring.

And, thanks again!

-- Matt
